Innovations that are shaping the new world

Not often we see an innovator on the scale of Elon Musk. The sky truly is the limit for this guy. Tesla cars, solar batteries (for cars, but could power entire US), space exploration, hyperloops for superfast travel between LA and San Francisco, and the last project of tunneling under LA. He started out with Paypal.

Traffic on the 405 freeway could well be the worst in the world. Musk wasn't trying to shape the future, but just thought it was depressing to sit in traffic, so came up with this.

I liked the futuristic video, hope he's able to implement some of his ideas in the real world. Huge investments though.

The tunneling has started. It will be a while, but this guy does what he says he will do. The Ironman movie character took inspiration from his life. Nice to see someone not accepting limitations and creating things that nobody else has. I like how he just keeps going, not stopping after one success but continuing on to the next mission. Not many people can do it at that scale.

Quote:
“Traffic is driving me nuts. Am going to build a tunnel boring machine and just start digging…” he tweeted on Dec. 17. “I am actually going to do this,” he added, two hours later.

Originally, the entrepreneur began digging underneath his SpaceX’s headquarters in Hawthorne, California. But, in August he got approval from the Hawthorne City Council to start digging a test tunnel off of his company’s property, the Daily Breeze reports.

Los Angeles isn’t the only city with “soul-destroying traffic” that Musk hopes to improve. Ultimately, he plans to provide travel between New York and DC in less than 30 minutes, according to the Boring Company. On Oct. 20, he received conditional approval to start digging on the east coast, The Washington Post reports.

The Boring Company’s utility permit granted to them by the Maryland Department of Transportation will allow the company to dig about 10 miles of tunnels under a specific section of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, Doug Mayer, a spokesperson for Gov. Larry Hogan, told The Washington Post.

Could it be this simple? Glass panels to harvest all the energy we need?

Interesting tech. Baba Vanga once said that around 2018 - 2020 we would discover how to harvest 'helium-3' from the ether, and that this would solve all energy concerns.

Musk is also one of the leaders in warning against AI. This threat isn't clear to the public yet, but it is very real.

My God... The killer robots could bring the whole Matrix narrative home.

Quote:
“Unless people want to see new weapons of mass destruction – in the form of vast swarms of lethal microdrones – spreading around the world, it’s imperative to step up and support the United Nations’ efforts to create a treaty banning lethal autonomous weapons. This is vital for national and international security,” Stuart Russell, founder and vice-president of Bayesian Logic said in a statement accompanying the letter.

I'm not bothered in the slightest about the idea that computers will become conscious and enslave the human race because according to most professional researchers of consciousness studies, AI becoming conscious isn't possible.

Yogananda certainly didn't mention anything about threats from killer robots. I find the whole idea quite laughable. We already have quantum computers like that Watson thing, and that is about the limit as far as I can see.

The idea, I suppose, is that as microchips interact with human tissue at more complex levels, some form of AI could generate consciousness. But, it would still be dependent on the human tissue and the human brain and mind ultimately.

A more likely scenario is akin to the movie The Lawnmower Man, where a retarded man hooks himself into a virtual reality computer system and it goes wrong, causing worldwide calamity.

That's not really the problem when you realize that one programmer could control vast swarms of tiny insect-like robots, each with the power to kill, and the ability to move and turn swifter than humans could comprehend.

As to being conscious. Machines don't have to be conscious to learn. A program that can program, and thereby add code to its programming would still not be conscious, but it would definitely be able to respond to new situations as if it were conscious.

I wouldn't discard this so easily. If a visionary like Musk takes it very serious, maybe try to see what he's seeing.

Master said nothing about this, - why would he? - but he did say that the 1951 movie The Day The Earth Stood Still would come true.

The Day The Earth Stood Still - Plot; Remake 2008, same title w. Keanu Reeves (from Wikipedia, said to be very close to the oríginal, 1951 movie):

Quote:
In 1928, a solitary mountaineer encounters a glowing sphere. He loses consciousness and when he wakes, the sphere has gone and there is a scar on his hand where a sample of his DNA has been taken.

In the present day, a rapidly moving object is detected beyond Jupiter's orbit and forecast to impact Manhattan. It is moving at 30,000 kilometers per second, enough to destroy all life on Earth. The United States government hastily assembles a group of scientists, including Dr. Helen Benson and her friend Dr. Michael Granier, to develop a survival plan.

As it nears the planet, the object slows down just before impact. Revealed to be a large spherical spaceship, it lands gently in Central Park. The sphere is quickly surrounded by NYPD and heavily armed US military forces. An alien emerges and Helen moves forward to greet it; but amidst the confusion, the alien is shot. A gigantic robot appears and temporarily disables everything in the vicinity before the wounded alien voices the command "Klaatu barada nikto" to shut down the robot's defensive response.

The alien's exterior is found to be a bioengineered space suit, composed of placenta-like material covering a human-like being. The being quickly ages into Klaatu, who looks like the mountaineer from 1928. Klaatu informs Secretary of Defense Regina Jackson that he is a representative of a group of civilizations, sent to talk to the leaders of Earth about saving the planet. When Jackson instead sends him to be interrogated, Klaatu escapes and reconnects with Helen and her stepson, Jacob, telling them that he must finish his mission to "save the Earth".

The presence of the sphere, and other smaller ones that begin to appear all over the world, causes widespread panic. The military launches a drone attack on the Central Park sphere, but are thwarted by the robot. The military takes a weapons-free approach, cautiously enclosing the robot, soon nicknamed "GORT" (for Genetically Organized Robotic Technology), and transporting it to Mount Weather, an underground facility in Virginia.

Klaatu meets with another alien, Mr. Wu, who has lived on Earth for 70 years. Wu tells Klaatu that he has found the human race to be destructive, stubborn and unwilling to change, which matches Klaatu's experiences. Klaatu orders the smaller spheres to collect specimens of animal species, to preserve them for later reintroduction to the Earth. He clarifies for Helen that he means to save the Earth from destruction by humankind. When a policeman attempts to take them into custody, Klaatu kills him then promptly revives the officer, telling Helen and Jacob that he did this to simply disarm an obstacle to his mission.

Hoping to persuade Klaatu to change his mind about humanity, Helen takes him to the home of Professor Barnhardt, a Nobel Prize winner. They discuss how Klaatu's own race went through a drastic, collaborative evolution to prevent the demise of their own planet. Barnhardt pleads that Earth is at the same precipice, and humanity should be given a chance to understand that it too must change. While the adults are talking, Jacob calls the authorities to come and arrest Klaatu.

While the military is examining GORT, the robot transforms into a swarm of winged, insect-like, nano-machines that self-replicate as they consume everything in their path. The swarm soon devours the entire facility, emerging above ground to continue feeding.

The military capture Helen while Klaatu and Jacob escape on foot. As they travel, Klaatu learns more about humanity through Jacob. When Jacob contacts Helen and arranges to meet at his father's grave, the Secretary sends her to try to change Klaatu's mind. At the grave, Jacob is heartbroken that Klaatu cannot resurrect his long dead father. As Helen and Jacob have a tear-filled reunion, Klaatu's cumulative observations of humans convinces him to stop the swarm.

Dr. Granier drives them to the Central Park sphere, but the swarm has reached massive proportions. Klaatu trudges through the swarm to the sphere, touching it moments before his own body is consumed. The sphere deactivates the swarm, saving humanity, but at the expense of electrical activity on Earth, per Klaatu's warning that there will be a price to the modern human way of life. The giant sphere leaves the Earth.

Exactly...

...where and when did Master say this to come true?!

Word of mouth. Source considered extremely reliable. (where is the foot-in-the-mouth smiley?)

The debate is on:

Quote:
GENEVA —
The United Nations is set to host talks on the use of autonomous weapons, but those hoping for a ban on the machines dubbed "killer robots" will be disappointed, the ambassador leading the discussions said Friday.

More than 100 artificial intelligence entrepreneurs led by Tesla's Elon Musk in August urged the U.N. to enforce a global ban on fully automated weapons, echoing calls from activists who have warned the machines will put civilians at enormous risk.

....................

The open letter co-signed by Musk as well as Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of Google's DeepMind, warned that killer robots could become "weapons that despots and terrorists use against innocent populations, and weapons hacked to behave in undesirable ways."

"Once this Pandora's box is opened, it will be hard to close," they said.

The debate...

...necessarily is stepping up and widened...

- Neuro technologies will be able to manipulate intentions, emotions, and decisions. - Artificial intelligence and brain–computer interfaces must respect and preserve people's privacy, identity, agency and equality, say Rafael Yuste, Sara Goering and colleagues.

Musk on killer bots:

"Sweet Dreams" - Elon Musk's Periodic Reminder Of The Coming AI Apocalypse

Elon Musk just gave people a powerful and eerie visual related to his belief that Artificial Intelligence (AI) could usher in a SkyNet style apocalypse where the machines take over and kill us all. In a talk given last July, Musk said, “I keep sounding the alarm bell but until people see robots going down the street killing people, they don’t know how to react because it seems so ethereal."

On Sunday Musk took to twitter to vividly illustrate his point, retweeting a creepy viral video which showcases the DARPA-funded Boston Dynamics "Atlas" military robot's astounding ability to do a back flip - something which researchers have called "bonkers" for the shocking and unexpected compounding leaps in development of humanoid robot technology that Atlas represents.

Musk commented on the original "we dead" tweet with the ominous warning: "This is nothing. In a few years, that bot will move so fast you'll need a strobe light to see it. Sweet dreams..."

And he followed with another tweet accompanied by the 90's hip-hop song "Regulate" emphasizing his oft-repeated message that AI is a "public risk" that must be regulated: "Got to regulate AI/robotics like we do food, drugs, aircraft & cars. Public risks require public oversight. Getting rid of the FAA wouldn’t make flying safer. They’re there for good reason."

In a recent Rolling Stone interview Musk told Neuralink staff after showing them a documentary on AI, “Maybe there's a five to 10 percent chance of success [of making AI safe].” He's long emphasized that governments need to "proactively" regulate and monitor advances in artificial intelligence before it's too late, as the technology poses "a fundamental existential risk for human civilization."

Rolling Stone's summation of Musk's words to the Neuralink crew points out that, "the problem with building something that's smarter than you is ... that it's smarter than you. Add to that the fact that AI has no remorse, no morality, no emotions – and humanity may be in deep ****. This is the good son's second chance against the remorseless father he couldn't change."

He further admitted to the group that he invested in DeepMind - the British AI research company acquired by Google in 2014 - with the aim of keeping an eye on Google’s development of AI. "There's a lot of risk in concentration of power. So if AGI [artificial general intelligence] represents an extreme level of power, should that be controlled by a few people at Google with no oversight?" Musk told Rolling Stone.

And Musk's instincts appear to be correct, as DeepMind itself proudly defines its purpose on its website as follows: "We’re on a scientific mission to push the boundaries of AI." Such personal monitoring of the industry is what Musk referenced in a previous talk in July when he said, "I have exposure to the most cutting-edge AI and I think people should be really concerned about it."

Meanwhile, it appears that Musk's "sweet dreams" tweet regarding DARPA/Boston Dynamics' back flipping humanoid military robot hints at the future possibility that such a mind-numbingly advanced and capable machine is a prime example of just the type of robot, when equipped with AI, that will do us all in. As one researcher, commenting on the significance of the pre-back flip/post-back flip threshold, characterizes:

But I think we're in a new robotic age now. There was a time before Atlas could do backflips, back when robots were for factories, bomb disposal, vacuuming, and the occasional gimmick, and none of the useful ones were humanoids. Now we're living in an era where humanoid robots are apparently as agile as we are. So what will they be used for? It’s time to get out the popcorn. Or ask Musk might point out, it will be too late to get out the popcorn as it will already be "lights out/sweet dreams" on the end of humanity from the moment such a super bot comes online and goes conscious.

Elon Musk... Aside from Tesla and Spacex, the leading innovator of our time is involved in some other projects that can transform our world:

solar roofs

battery gigafactory

hyperloop

Of course, someone like that is also a major inspiration to others who suddenly realize that the world is on the brink of a whole new energy chapter.

THERE IS A BRAND NEW BATTERY TECHNOLOGY THAT WILL PROBABLY MAKE
MUSK'S WHOLE EMPIRE OBSOLETE: A BATTERY BASED ON BEING A CAPACITOR. Lithium is already like a dodo bird.

Just around the corner as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kv7w6wqR98Q

We're in a new era of innovation. Not unlike the beginning of the previous century when some nuts were driving around in cars and experimenting with airplanes. We're now looking at hyperloops between cities, self-driving cars, to be extended to self-flying cars, privatized space travel, solar energy for all electrical needs, and so on. It's all right there or right around the corner. Exciting.

People tend to look for politicians to change the world, but they rarely ever do. Innovators change the world (and yogis help to create the vibration for it).
